Emerald is a green variety belonging to the Beryl group which has a hardness of 7.5 to 8. The beryl group occurs as hexagonal crystals composed of beryllium aluminium silicate, and is transparent to translucent. The finest Emerald gems and crystals have been found primarily in Colombia, but gem quality Emeralds are also mined in Brazil, Russia and Africa.
